Ecueil de Lavezzi, Horsehead and Ile de Perduto
The waters around the lighthouse south of the Lavezzi Islands are among the most demanding dive territory. The area is situated in the middle of the Straits of Bonifacio, which means the currents and waves there are often quite strong. For this reason, we only go there when the conditions are favourable. The currents and good water quality here have provided ideal conditions for the development of extraordinarily rich underwater flora and fauna. These can be admired in depths of between 10 and 35 metres. With a bit of luck you might see some of the tuna and stingray that often congregate in the strait between Corsica and Sardinia.
Horsehead, depth 10 m – 40 m
Here, among the stacked rock massifs, there are numerous grottos and bizarre rock formations: the most impressive of these is reminiscent of a horse’s head. The base structure is predominantly cave-like and covered on the inside with thousands of stone corals and zoanthids. The vertical walls are overgrown with red gorgonians. A shoal of between 50 and 100 imposing barracuda can occasionally be seen near the horsehead rock. |
